Functional Art

“Art is Life, Art is Transformative”
~Surbhhi K. Modi

Surbhhi K. Modi is a student of art history, and often looks at other people’s practice and pays homage to artists she respects. Inspired by Brancusi’s bird serie, the eponymous series was started in 2016, and was an ode to the Romanian artist widely considered the father of modern sculpture for his brutalist style and raw elegance. The formal aspects of the form and materiality of the sculpture is central to her practice. Here she releases the table from the shackles of use and usability imbuing them with totemic quality telling various folk tales and stories from the Indian epics.

यह बंदर क्या है

The Monkey or Bandar is an ongoing subject of Surbhhi’s artistic ouvre, which she revisits often. The Bandar is a deeply complex work which is highly conceptual, it is both personal referring to familial love and a cry for independence and yet it deals with universal themes of national pride, social-cultural issues, and freedom of speech and body. Bandar intends to spread the message of tolerance, love, unity despite diversity, of being human not just just a woman or an Indian.
