Pontone Gallery

Surbhhi’s textiles are represented by Pontone Gallery in 74 Newman St, London W1T 3DB, United Kingdom. Pontone Gallery is thrilled to announce an exclusive exhibition featuring the latest works by Surbhhi K Modi, an esteemed Indian artist who divides her time between Delhi and London. Renowned internationally as both an exhibitor and curator, Modi is deeply committed to advocating the societal benefits of public art. Her artistic practice encompasses a diverse range of mediums, including sculpture, textiles, and installation. For this special occasion, the gallery will proudly present a selection of her captivating tapestries.
Each tapestry showcases intricately adorned vases, steeped in traditional Asian shapes and styles. These vases serve as canvases for depictions of sinuously stretched dragons and a plethora of twisting, variegated plant forms, meticulously applied to create a vibrant collage. Utilizing a variety of textile manipulation techniques such as weaving, embroidery, and printing, Modi expertly weaves these elements together, invoking a historical and culturally ‘female’ domain of expertise.
Modi’s artistic content is characterized by its whimsical and playful nature, drawing inspiration from her Indian background and wider Asian context. Through her work, she explores the fragmentation and peculiar amalgamations of the post-modern world, transcending cultural boundaries to address pressing ecological concerns. Her references to the religious epics of the Mahabharata and Ramayana, as well as vernacular tales, advocate for a profound respect for nature.
